BA in Fashion with Promotion

Fashion with Promotion is a new type of fashion course, it's about designing for a particular fashion garment/product area and learning how to promote it online with good photography and moving image. You will also gather an understanding of the business of fashion: marketing, sourcing, costing and design a website. When you have successfully completed this course, you will be able to formulate innovative and enterprising ideas for a constantly evolving fashion industry.

During Year One, you will be encouraged to explore new ways of thinking, drawing, developing and communicating innovative concepts. You will be introduced to pattern-cutting and fashion construction and also photography. An emphasis on fashion illustration and mood board design enables a professional approach to communicating design concepts.

The second year focus is to prepare you for industry requirements with the specialist knowledge in pattern cutting and construction, fabrics, designing print for fashion, and communicating your designs with relevant and up-to-date digital skills. Photography editing leads to fashion video and how to promote your brand image through social media in Semester 4.

In Year Three, you will be supported to work more independently to find who you are as a designer. You will have an opportunity to design for accessories and menswear tailoring. In the final semester you will design, produce and showcase a collection of your niche fashion product, explore costing and sourcing and promote your range with branding, website design, photography and/or video. You will also have the opportunity to put your skills into practice through an industry work placement.

This year is about refining your fashion design identity. Following on from Semester 6, where you designed a collection of your chosen niche fashion product, you now design and create an expanded collection of garments that compliment your niche area. You will produce a toile pre-collection in Semester 7 and a final collection in Semester 8.

A dissertation on an area of fashion that interests you will compliment your design understanding. Within groups, you will plan a showcase event and use your photography and/or video skills to promote your fashion design collection. Modules on Product Management and Fashion Entrepreneurism will ensure that you have the essential business acumen to produce and launch your own design label.

Fashion consumer priorities are changing, the preoccupation with ‘quick fix’ and ‘fast fashion’ are been replaced with a demand for quality design that offers more individuality and longevity. We need designers to produce clothes that are versatile, well-designed and offer a unique look.

This course is focused on developing designers who want to launch their own brand, producing niche fashion products. Students will also acquire the skills sought after by fashion design companies, should they wish to go straight into employment.

This course will develop you professionally and teach you a range of transferable skills that can lead to many different careers opportunities with the creative industries.

How do I apply?

Applications are made through the CAO system.
Apply before Jan 20th - fee €20
1st Feb is the normal closing date - fee €40
1st May is the final closing date - online fee €50
22nd August - Round 1 offers

Minimum entry requirements

Applicants should have grade D3 or better in at least 5 subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including either Irish or English. Maths is not required.

Applicants must have either Leaving Certificate Art or Design Communication Graphics or equivalent or will be required to submit a portfolio of design related work.
